How to Overcome the Winter Blues

Daylight savings can make it challenging to feel productive and energized, especially when it gets dark out before dinner time. Many times, daylight can symbolize awakeness and active periods, while darkness symbolizes times of rest. However, when the days become shorter, it is likely that you will still have tasks and things to do when it gets dark out. So, what are some ways that you can overcome the winter blues?

One way to overcome the winter blues is to get up earlier; because the sun sets earlier, it rises earlier as well! If you seem to be waking up after the sun has risen, try going to bed earlier and waking with the sunlight in the morning. It’s important to remember to continue to aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night, therefore you may need to go to bed earlier than you are used to. Sunlight can help stimulate feelings of energy, so waking up with the sun is a great way to make your days feel longer and allow for higher levels of productivity.

Some other ways to overcome the winter blues are to establish a routine and set goals for yourself. By creating a routine that allows for consistency and structure, you are more likely to stick to it, stay motivated, and feel a sense of purpose. Setting realistic and achievable goals for yourself is also a great way to maintain motivation and give you something to strive for. Tracking your progress and celebrating your accomplishments will help you stay inspired.

It is also helpful to stay active and engage in physical activity throughout the winter season. Exercise and raising your heart rate will help boost both your energy levels and overall mood, which can both feel low during winter! Because it is cold, exercising outside may be difficult. Consider indoor activities like yoga, home workouts, or joining a gym.

Practicing self-care is another way to take care of yourself – both physically and mentally – this winter season. Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in activities that help you relax and recharge are crucial for maintaining your energy level and mood.

The last tip for overcoming the winter blues is to maintain social connections with friends and family. Plan virtual hangouts or find activities you can enjoy together, even from a distance. Staying connected with friends will help your overall mental health and wellbeing and sharing experiences can help boost your motivation.
