How to Read a Nutrition Label
Reading and understanding nutrition labels can be more challenging than it may first appear; there are many different numbers, servings sizes, nutrients, and ingredients all packed into one box on the back of a packaged food, and it can be tricky to know what all of those numbers mean! However, understanding nutrition labels is a crucial component in your wellness toolbox! So, let’s break it down and learn what to look out for on a nutrition label:
Highlighted in purple in the nutrition label above is the percent daily value. This percentage indicates how much of a particular nutrient one serving of the food provides compared to the daily recommended intake. It's based on a 2,000-calorie diet, so your needs may vary!
At the bottom of a nutrition label is the ingredient list, and it’s important to scan the ingredients list to understand what's in the product. Ingredients are listed by weight, with the main ingredient listed first. Watch out for additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients!
By following these steps, you can make informed choices about the foods you consume, promoting better health and well-being.
